Susan P. Blevins was born in England, then lived twenty-six years in Italy, and the past twenty-five in the USA, first in New Mexico, and currently in Houston, Texas.  She had a weekly column in a newspaper in Italy, and since living in the USA has been writing and publishing fiction, essays and poetry about her interesting life and world travels.  She loves reading, gardening, classical music, and cats, and is especially fond of intelligent conversation.

Theme for Issue 8!

We are currently reading submissions for our eighth issue! The theme for the eighth issue is: comics, be it drawn in sequential images or just plain funny. See the Submit tab for details on how to submit. We accept photography, art, comics, creative nonfiction, fiction, flash fiction, experimental work, and poetry.

Issue 6 is on its way!

For the sixth issue of The Magnolia Review, 3 artists submitted 11 pieces of art and photography, 5 creative nonfiction writers submitted 6 creative nonfiction pieces, 40 fiction writers submitted 42 stories, and 52 poets submitted 169 poems.

The delayed issue will be available in October.

Issue 5 is on its way!

For the fifth issue of The Magnolia Review, 0 artists submitted 0 pieces of art and photography, 2 creative nonfiction writers submitted 2 creative nonfiction pieces, 21 fiction writers submitted 21 stories, and 32 poets submitted 147 poems.

The Issue will be available on January 15.

Issue 5 Deadline–November 15

The deadline is approaching!

We are accepting art, photography, comics, poetry, creative nonfiction, comics, and fiction for our fifth issue. This time we are going to have a themed section, and we will accept other pieces that do not fit with the theme. (The theme is optional!)

The theme: Depression. Show us the diagnosis, dealing with depression, overcoming depression, anything to do with depression. Give us artwork, stories with depressed characters, poems with depressed speakers, comics, and so on. Interpret it yourself and show us what you created.

Deadline is November 15. For information on how to submit, check our Submit page. We are interested in comics, so please send them our way!

DSM-IV-TR Mood Disorders

1. Major Depressive Episode and Major Depressive Disorder

Major Depressive Disorder requires two or more major depressive episodes.

Diagnostic criteria:

Depressed mood and/or loss of interest or pleasure in life activities for at least 2 weeks and at least five of the following symptoms that cause clinically significant impairment in social, work, or other important areas of functioning almost every day

1. Depressed mood most of the day.
2. Diminished interest or pleasure in all or most activities.
3. Significant unintentional weight loss or gain.
4. Insomnia or sleeping too much.
5. Agitation or psychomotor retardation noticed by others.
6. Fatigue or loss of energy.
7. Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt.
8. Diminished ability to think or concentrate, or indecisiveness.
9. Recurrent thoughts of death (APA, 2000, p. 356).
